Section 9: Know your website visitors

Example of Google Analytics Report

Keeping track of where your visitors come from, how they found your website, what pages they visited and how long they stayed on the site is very important.

There are many tools available that show you these stats, the most common are Google Webmaster Tools and Google Analytics, both of which are free services.

In order to set them up, you will require access to the back end of your website in order to add their tracking code – if you don’t have this access, ask your designer to help.

Once you have these tools in place, utilize them. Check them regularly as part of your website maintenance and keep note of any problem areas. There are lots of tutorials available by Google and third parties which can be found online and will help you to find your way around.
